For national MBE certification through NMSDC, the business must generally be at least 51% owned, controlled, and operated by one or more U.S. citizens who are members of a recognized minority group. NMSDC-recognized minority groups include Asian-Indian, Asian-Pacific, Black, Hispanic, and Native American individuals, as defined by NMSDC certification standards.
Other MBE certification programs may have different eligibility standards and may accept lawful permanent resident status depending on the program.
